Does the Wim Hof Method have a beneficial impact on physiological and psychological outcomes in healthy and non-healthy participants? A systematic review
This systematic review of nine papers from eight trials examined the Wim Hof Method (WHM), consisting of Wim Hof breathing method (WHBM: hyperventilation 30–40 times followed by breath hold at low lung volume), cold therapy, and commitment. Findings indicate WHM may reduce inflammation in healthy and non-healthy participants by increasing epinephrine, interleukin-10, and decreasing pro-inflammatory cytokines. WHBM showed mixed effects on exercise performance and respiratory parameters like minute ventilation, tidal volume, and breathing frequency. A survey of over 3,200 practitioners reported benefits including increased energy, mood, mental focus, and general health, aligning with everyday wellness applications. The review highlights promising immunomodulatory effects, especially when combining cold exposure and WHBM, but calls for more research on non-healthy populations and exercise enhancement.
