This randomized controlled study examined the effects of 20 minutes of daily resonance frequency breathing for four weeks on young adults. Resonance breathing rate was individualized (found to be 6-6.5 breaths per minute for all participants) using a standard protocol, with breathing paced via an app while keeping depth constant. Results showed increased parasympathetic activity, decreased sympathetic activity, improved cognition, and reduced perceived stress levels compared to baseline. The study concludes that practicing deep breathing at the resonance frequency daily can alleviate anxiety and stress, enhance cognitive performance, and reduce cardiovascular morbidity. It aligns with HRV biofeedback where breathing at ~6 breaths/min maximizes respiratory sinus arrhythmia.
