The first shot counts the most: Tactical breathing as an intervention
This randomized between-subjects study investigated tactical breathing as a stress management technique on marksmanship performance. Tactical breathing comprises four equal-length phases: inhalation, post-inhalation hold, exhalation, and post-exhalation hold (4:4:4:4). The tactical breathing group demonstrated significantly higher initial shot accuracy, averaging 1.9 points better than controls (t(98)=8.489, p<.001, d=1.698). The study concludes that tactical breathing is an effective stress management technique that reduces arousal levels and improves performance in high-pressure situations. While the population context is military/law enforcement marksmen rather than general anxiety, the technique directly matches the app's box breathing pattern.
